Whittlesea is well-known for its potholes, but the growing number make it increasingly difficult for cars and taxis to navigate safely through town. With the municipality showing no initiative in doing anything about the roads, Ekuphumleni decided to take matters into their own hands.
During the week of 20 September 2021, students and teachers began filling the holes with whatever materials they could find. They started from the school and aim to work their way out of town, past Hewu Hospital, which has a large number of potholes and makes it difficult for all those coming for medical attention.
“We always say that we are part of the community here. This is just one way of putting into action what we say, to show the students that it is important to create a better environment ourselves,” says Mrs Xosa, one of the teachers organising the week’s work.
